Madras Crocodile Bank

Madras Crocodile Bank is located on the ECR Highway between Chennai and Mahabalipuram, about 15 Km before Mahabalipuram. The Crocodile Bank houses different varieties of Crocs, Anaconda Snakes (from Czech Republic) and some turtles. Tho' all the crocs look alike without any major difference, except the classifying name board kept in their pond identifying their variety, the park has a good number of these reptiles and is decently maintained. The visitors are allowed to watch the feeding of these reptiles over the weekends at mornings and evenings, which is a good to see activity here. A nice, shady area with a lot of crocodiles to watch for in one place, not more than a couple of hours...

Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary

Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary, a 80 Km drive from Chennai is a paradise of birds. The sanctuary is the home for thousands of migratory birds from Siberia, Russia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Burma and several other countries during the months of November to March. The most interesting fact is that, they fly thousands of miles to this small village, hidden from the rest of the world for these 5 months to hatch their young ones and fly back with their new family to their homeland. A variety of birds like Egret, Pelican, Stork, Painted Stork, Sandpiper, Heron, Cormorant, etc... flock the marsh lands surrounding the Madurantakam Lake. The villagers support these migratory birds by eliminating lights near their settlements and donot even celebrate Deepavali, so as not to disturb them. A visual treat, full of birds !!!
